Our CE classes are free to our paid members. Non-members are welcome to attend for a fee. Most of our classes are conducted or sponsored by our Associate Members. On occasion, we bring down classes that our board members have attended at industry events outside of the Valley.
We host luncheons with speakers from within the insurance industry as well as local business and government leaders. In the past, we have hosted TDI commissioners Mike Geeslin and Julia Rathgeber and, in 2016, we are hosting Commissioner David Mattax. Local business and government leaders have been hosted to discuss the impact of their work on the local economy and the local insurance market.
The Texas legislature meets every two years. Every year, we host a Legislative Luncheon in the fall. Depending on the year, our luncheon speaker discusses relevant issues to be discussed in the upcoming legislative session or discusses the outcome of relevant issues in the legislative session that just concluded. We help organize our members’ participation in IIAT’s Big “I” Legislative Day at the Capitol and, when necessary, our members testify before committees in the Texas Senate and House.
Every one of our events is an opportunity for Associate and Agency members to network with each other, but our Annual Insurance Day is specifically designed to bring agencies and carriers together to build or strengthen relationships. In alternating years, the main event for our Insurance Day consists of either a trade show or a golf tournament. By alternating every year, we feel demand and interest remains high amongst all involved.
We award $3,000 in scholarships annually to staff, and children of agency owners or staff, from member agencies. As of 2016, we have awarded $24,000 to students pursuing college degrees, certifications, or industry designations from accredited institutions or organizations. Here to sign up.
We seek out community service opportunities with organizations that have a Valleywide service footprint similar to ours. In recent years, we have developed relationships with Easter Seals Rio Grande Valley and Make-A-Wish Rio Grande Valley. The toys collected at our annual Christmas mixer, along with monetary contributions, have been donated to Easter Seals RGV and other local charitable organizations. To date, we have secured $22,500 in grants from Trusted Choice for Make-A-Wish RGV. Charitable contributions are given out on behalf of all of the members of IIA-RGV.
InVEST is a school-to-work insurance program that teams with high school and college educators to provide a useful insurance curriculum for students. The program is free for schools and includes lesson plans, textbooks, activities, and more. We have a fledgling program at South Texas ISD’s BETA Academy in Edinburg. The keys to making InVEST work are a committed champion in the school (i.e., teacher) and supportive local insurance professionals who are willing to share their experience with the students.
